  • I have to be frank but digital foundry is best when coming to reviews. They don't give hollow reviews or thrash game companies. They go deep knee into technical area of game and game engine. And if there is some problem they point out in a mature way by providing fitting solution. Example - halo infinite gameplay. You have my respect digital foundry.

The sense of satisfaction one gets at seeing visuals like this at well over 100 fps on a graphics setting called Ultra Nightmare cannot be overstated! id truly made a masterpiece here for the PC enthusiast who has been playing DOOM since the beginning.

  • I'm not saying that John Carmack engines were not good, but idtech 7 is completely non carmack engine and it is the best of a lot. It is almost perfect engine, fully optimized across all platforms. They've really outdone themselves, the is flawless and engine is one of the best in industry.

  • Wait, I'm dumbfounded, I have a ps4 slim, can it run Doom Eternal at 60fps or would it get locked at 30fps? I'm also new to the console world and I think I heard and read somewhere that the slim is capped or locked to run games at only 30fps. Aaaand, I've also read somewhere that there are games that you can run at 60fps on a slim. *visible confusion*

    • I'm looking forward to the Zenimax/Bethesda family of games coming to GamePass (both the already released games and getting new ones on release day). But I bought Doom Eternal day 1 on Steam, knew I would love it and I was right :P But yeah I've been sub'd to GamePass PC since it released and it's paid for its self every month. Having all the Zenimax/Bethesda studios and their IP's on GamePass and releasing day 1 bumps the value even more.

    • @Nick Motsarsky on consoles, yes. On the PC I cant agree. Competitive gaming strived for frames eversince and there was good reason for it. Sure, games that wanted to set benchmarks could not run on high framerates on mid range systems when they came out, but there isnt a single shooter on this planet that aims for less than 60fps during design on PC. There is only marketing trying to fool people into thinking that the shader that is barely noticable and costs 30 percent performance must be enabled to play the game. Frames are important for a fluent experience. That was never any different.

    • Wtf are you talking about? 90's and 2000's were full of 20-30fps games on consoles and most powerful PCs could barely hit 30fps on Doom 3. 60fps stopped being the norm once 3D games came out..

  • Man, I wish my gaming PC was good enough to run this game! It couldn't run Doom 2016 at a solid 60fps even at Low settings (which looked worse than console in some respects) though maybe with the improved tech Eternal might stand a better chance? Still, I played it on base PS4 and, whilst the 60fps performance was mighty fine (and the top priority for sure), the blurriness when you looked further into the middle distance or beyond was definitely noticeable. In some ways it made me appreciate how ready I am for an upgrade to this nearly 7-year old hardware. The PS5 better well offer an improved backwards compatible version! This game after all is a true technical achievement (and a bloody brilliant game too!) and deserves to be played with the best presentation possible on consoles.

  • I’ve always had the belief that in order to deem a game as “looking good” or not is to turn all the textures to essentially a single color per poly. If the lighting, color grading, contrast, and range of color are great than good textures just enhance the image. This game would look great with terrible textures still. Compare this to even new games like AC odyssey or Watch dogs legion. These games would look horrific with extremely low res textures. Get the feel done first then work on texture quality. That seems to be what is done here

  • Tbh I was kinda disappointed by the performance on PC. While the level complexity and gore are greatly improved, I feel like the graphical fidelity wasn't exactly proportional to the FPS I had. With a lot of compromises in the settings (highest textures though) I hovered around 50 to 70 with occasional dips near 30. With Doom 2016 I could crank most settings to the highest and could play with well above 90 FPS which still makes it my favorite PC experience with a 1440p/144 Hz monitor. I have an R7 1700 and GTX 1080 btw.

  • I still don't quite understand why everything is designed around such an athletic, agile character. Since when was that something Doom ever brough to mind?? They've mixed up their Quake with Doom again, making a good game in the process, I'm enjoying it, but it's not a fair reflection of the originals really.

    • First time I played I installed it on my NVME drive. But I've moved it to my SATA HDD's I use for storage or to "park" games (it's actually 2 x 3 TB HDD's in RAID 0 but I don't think that makes much difference). The game still loads levels in about 3-4 seconds. It's crazy how fast this engine loads levels.

    • I know Microsoft owning Zenimax/Bethesda changes things, but before that Bethesda did allow any of the studios they owned to use id tech if they wanted (but no studios outside the Zenimax/Bethesda family could license it). A few games did take id tech and modify it for their games. Evil Within 1 and 2 (Evil Within 2 branded their fork of id tech 5 "STEM Engine"), Dishonored 2 (they branded it "void engine", they seem to be continuing development of void engine since death loop uses it). But those were heavily edited versions of id tech 5 with maybe some id tech 6 code (id tech 6 was still in development). Now that Microsoft bought Zenimax that means any other Microsoft owned studio could use id tech if they wanted.

  • Its so depressing to realise most of what you see on even high end game engines is essentially just a bunch of triangles with fancy textures and lighting applied. Lots of cheating under the hood with what is not on screen effectively vanished into the ether. We seem to have hit a plateau with each iteration only advancing in areas that have been known for some time wasting a massive increase in raw horsepower on what could be described as polishing the Fnking Apples. Whichever way you look at it they're still only apples. We need an entirely new way to draw things on screen that doesn't use triangles.

    • @Digital Foundry I feel similarly. Its ruined the magic of cinema. Despite orders of magnitude increases in onscreen rendering fidelity its easy to spot. I think Tim Sweeney's talk on the near impossible task of capturing the natural fluidity of human movement explains this shortcoming best. T2 didn't use CGI for most of its stunts, decades later we are nowhere near capturing those moments using CGI. Its easy to spot and for me always ruined the experience. Avatar is different, it doesn't try to pretend.
